The styles of embroidery used by Amaya date back to ancient Persia. The techniques were developed by wives of the Mogul court. Originally done in white thread, only siz traditional patterns emerged. One can see such motifs as mango, coriander, leaf, grass and grain. Amaya has expanded on these themes to make new patterns.
Today the work is done by women and men in small northern villages of India.
